Lady Murasaki — Way of the Sword Recurring NPC and Side-Mission Giver

Lady Murasaki is Way of the Sword’s side-activity giver. A spectral writer, she tasks Musashi with investigating local mysteries across Kyoto — and with recovering her 36 lost Lion Dogs. Her requests unlock the game’s two signature optional systems: the eight Mysteries of Kyoto and the Lion Dog rescue chain.

Who Lady Murasaki is

IGN’s launch coverage describes her as “a spectral writer who tasks you with investigating local mysteries”. She enters the story in The Light of Vengeance, the twelfth story mission: “an indigo butterfly channeling Murasaki’s voice and sass demands he return to her at Yasaka Shrine” (IGN’s walkthrough). From that meeting on, her two activities run in parallel with the main story.

She is not the gauntlet spirit — that role belongs to Shizuka, the Oni woman in Musashi’s Oni Gauntlet who offers gameplay guidance. Murasaki’s business is Kyoto’s mysteries, not the bracer’s.

What she unlocks

Mysteries of Kyoto technically unlock slightly before her introduction — after the main mission What Lurks in the Shadows — but Murasaki is the character who frames and assigns them. The full lists, unlock missions and rewards live on the side content guide and the Lion Dog locations page.

What her activities pay out

• Charms — four of the 15 tracked by the Charmed Life trophy are itemized from Mysteries (#5–#8) by Gaming ProMax’s reward list; the charms guide’s source maps two more (#3–#4), for six in total.
• Upgrade materials — “The Blessed Man” Mystery pays a Fine Silk Cloth (PowerPyx’s material list), one of the 25 behind the Dressed to Kill trophy.
• Sword skins — the six-step Lion Dog ladder (Sakurahime at 6 through Kikoku at 36), tabled on the outfits guide.
• Lore — Legends and Observations accumulate in the Curious Cases menu.

When can you find her?

From The Light of Vengeance onward, her activities are map-driven: butterfly icons mark active Mysteries, paw icons mark Lion Dogs, and both stay reachable for the rest of the campaign. Free roam runs to the point-of-no-return warning before The Clash At Rendaino, and the post-credits Continue menu drops you back before the finale — nothing she offers is missable on a first save. Both systems reset in New Game+.

Strategic value

Murasaki’s activities are the cleanest charm-and-cosmetics pipeline in the game: eight Mysteries and 36 rescues cover four of the 15 charms — six by the charms guide’s fuller mapping — plus six sword skins and a share of the upgrade materials, all feeding the Platinum roadmap. They slot naturally into roadmap step two — the free-roam cleanup parked before the finale.
