FAQ

What are Mysteries of Kyoto?
Eight optional investigation quests marked on the map by butterfly icons and tracked as Observations in the Curious Cases menu. They unlock after the main mission What Lurks in the Shadows; finishing all eight earns the Demystified trophy.
What are Chance Encounters?
Eighteen side missions marked by notebook icons, mostly helping ordinary citizens. They appear as the story cleanses each area of Kyoto; finishing all eighteen earns the No Job Too Small trophy.
When does side content unlock?
Mysteries of Kyoto unlock after completing the main mission What Lurks in the Shadows; Lady Murasaki formally introduces them during the twelfth mission, The Light of Vengeance. Chance Encounters appear from the early game onward as areas are cleansed.
Do side quests carry over into New Game+?
No. PowerPyx lists both Mysteries of Kyoto and Chance Encounters among the systems that do not carry into New Game+ — they must be done again on a second run. Cleanup is safer on your first save via the Continue menu.
What does rescuing townspeople do?
Random Genma attacks on citizens around Kyoto feed the Citizen Savior trophy — rescue 30 townspeople. You must speak to the rescued citizen for it to count, per PowerPyx.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword keeps its map busy with two side-content systems — Mysteries of Kyoto and Chance Encounters — plus random citizen rescues. This page explains how each system works, when it opens up, and what it pays out. For the per-item collectible sweeps (Lion Dogs, Genma Notes, stones), see the pages linked from the Platinum roadmap.

Both systems open as the story progresses — individual entries gate behind named main missions, listed below.

When does side content unlock?

  • Mysteries of Kyoto unlock after the main mission “What Lurks in the Shadows” (PowerPyx, confirmed by Gaming ProMax). Lady Murasaki — the spectral writer behind the activity — formally introduces them in The Light of Vengeance, the twelfth story mission, at Yasaka Shrine (IGN walkthrough). Her character page has the full introduction.
  • Chance Encounters appear “once you have cleansed [an area] of corruption” (IGN trophy page — single-source on the cleansing mechanic), with the first opportunities from the early mission The Curse of Kiyomizu-zaka Slope onward. Each encounter then gates behind a named main mission.

Names and unlock missions below match PowerPyx and Gaming ProMax exactly. Reward names for #5–#8 are Gaming ProMax single-source; #1–#2 rewards were not itemized by any fetched source, while #3–#4 charm attributions come from the charms guide’s source (single-source) and #4’s Fine Silk Cloth from PowerPyx’s material list.

Note on naming: PowerPyx files #7 as “The Three Worms” with Gaming ProMax attaching the parenthetical “(Worm-ly Ways)” to both #6 and #7 — the in-game mapping of that subtitle is ambiguous across sources, so this page does not print it as a quest name.

All 18 Chance Encounters

Grouped by the main mission that unlocks them, per PowerPyx and Gaming ProMax (lists match exactly). Charm rewards are Gaming ProMax single-source; material rewards cross-check against PowerPyx’s material location lists.

The five Hidden Treasure encounters work differently from the rest: the marker is approximate, and you “use your Oni Eyes (Oni Vision) in the right spot to uncover the treasure itself” (Gaming ProMax) — the encounter must be active before the chest appears. The upgrade materials page lists which numbered treasure holds which material.

What does side content pay out?

  • Twelve charms itemized. Four Mystery charms plus eight Chance Encounter charms, per Gaming ProMax — and the charms guide’s source additionally maps two more Mystery charms (#3 and #4), which would bring side content’s share to fourteen of the 15 tracked by the Charmed Life trophy.
  • Upgrade materials. Eleven confirmed drops: three Tamahagane and one Fine Silk Cloth from Ace Archer encounters plus the five Hidden Treasure cloths (all per PowerPyx’s material list), Hidden Treasure #4’s extra Tamahagane, and Gaming ProMax’s single-source Mount Oe Tamahagane — feeding the gear-maxing math on the upgrade materials page.
  • Lore. Mysteries are tracked as Observations in the Curious Cases menu; Lion Dog rescues add Legends there and unlock sword skins — see the Lion Dog locations page.

What about the citizen rescues?

Separately from both systems, citizens are “randomly attacked all over Kyoto” by Genma (PowerPyx). Rescue 30 of them for the Citizen Savior trophy — and note the fine print: “If you do not speak to the citizen it will not count toward this trophy”. Rescues award “a small reward” (IGN), type unspecified.

Can you miss any of it?

No — with one asterisk. Free roam runs all the way to the final mission The Clash At Rendaino, which warns you before the point of no return; after the credits, the Continue menu drops you back just before it with everything still reachable. The asterisk is New Game+: both Mysteries of Kyoto and Chance Encounters reset, so the second playthrough re-runs all 26 entries. The cleanup math lives in the New Game+ guide.
