FAQ

Who is the protagonist of Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
Miyamoto Musashi, a new Oni warrior set in Edo-period Kyoto. He is modeled on the real historical swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, but is an original fictional character, not a direct adaptation.
Is Way of the Sword connected to the older Onimusha games?
No. Capcom has confirmed Way of the Sword is a standalone narrative in a separate continuity, set about 60 years after Dawn of Dreams. New players can start here without spoilers.
What is Musashi's signature mechanic?
Break Issen — a reworked version of the series' classic Issen parry. Successfully parrying drains enemy stamina; once the gauge empties, Musashi can execute the demon by dismemberment. On bosses, Break Issen lets you choose between massive damage or more souls.

Miyamoto Musashi is the protagonist of Onimusha: Way of the Sword (2026), the franchise’s first new entry in twenty years. He is an Oni warrior in Edo-period Kyoto who fights the Genma with a katana and the new Break Issen parry system. He is modeled on the real historical swordsman Miyamoto Musashi (1584–1645), author of The Book of Five Rings, but is an original fictional character, not a one-to-one historical adaptation.

Setting and time period

Way of the Sword is set in Edo-period Kyoto, roughly 60 years after the events of Dawn of Dreams. The setting is its own continuity — Capcom designed it deliberately to be accessible to new players. References to Samanosuke, Jubei, and Soki exist in the broader lore, but they are not required knowledge for the main story.

The director is Satoru Nihei, the producer is Akihito Kadowaki, and the engine is RE Engine — the same engine that powers Resident Evil Village, Devil May Cry 5, and Monster Hunter Wilds. The game launched on September 4, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC.

Fighting style

Musashi’s core weapon is a single katana. His playstyle centers on striking, parrying, deflecting projectiles, and the new Oni Armaments — heavy-damage consumable weapons fueled by blue souls that let him tear through tougher enemies.

Break Issen is the headline mechanic. Successfully parrying an enemy drains their stamina bar; once it empties, Musashi can execute the demon by dismemberment. On bosses, this choice point becomes a strategic decision: take massive damage now, or hold the parry for the soul payout. Consecutive parries and dodges also grant combat buffs that reward aggressive play.

Visual design

Capcom modeled Musashi on Toshiro Mifune, the Japanese actor famous for his roles in Akira Kurosawa’s samurai films (Rashomon, Yojimbo, Sanjuro). The 2023 Netflix Onimusha anime also used Mifune as the visual reference for its protagonist Miyamoto, who shares the Musashi archetype. IGN’s launch review highlighted the cinematic weight of Musashi’s combat animations and the way his katana cuts through Genma flesh.
