The Genma — Nobunaga, Fortinbras, and the Lords of Light

The Genma (幻魔, “phantom demons”) are Onimusha’s recurring antagonists — a demon race from another dimension who invade feudal Japan across every mainline game. They are led by Fortinbras, the God of Light, and they use historical warlords — most famously Oda Nobunaga — as their earthly vessels and pawns.

The lore

In the Onimusha timeline, Fortinbras the God of Light wants to subjugate the human world. To do that, he needs a powerful human vessel — a warrior with the ambition, the army, and the cruelty to do the conquest for him. Across the series, that vessel is Oda Nobunaga, the real-life Sengoku-period warlord who nearly unified Japan in the 1570s and 1580s.

In the original Japanese script, “genma” was translated as “demon” in the early English versions of Warlords. Later entries left the term intact as part of the series’ signature vocabulary. The Oni Gauntlet — the bracer every protagonist wears — exists specifically because humans can absorb Genma souls to fight back.

Named Genma lords

• Fortinbras — God of Light, king of the Genma, final boss of Warlords and Dawn of Dreams. Human form and serpent form. His weakness is his central eye.
• Marcellus — Powerful Genma, encountered twice in Warlords (first summoned by Guildenstern against Yumemaru; later in improved form).
• Guildenstern — Genma scientist. Built the time-warp device that enables Onimusha 3’s dual-timeline story. Betrays Marcellus.
• Hecuba — Female Genma who disguises herself as a woman and spirits Yumemaru into the netherworld in Warlords.
• Reynaldo — Guildenstern’s first creation, early boss in Warlords.
• Ginghamphatts, Gogadantess, Jujudormah — major bosses from Onimusha 2, the latter of which is the final boss in the demon world.
• The Triumvirate — the three Genma generals of Dawn of Dreams: Claudius, Rosencrantz, and Ophelia. Serve Hideyoshi Toyotomi.
• Hideyoshi Toyotomi — final villain of Dawn of Dreams. A human puppet of the Genma, succeeding Nobunaga after the events of Onimusha 3.
• Sasaki Kojiro — antagonist rival in Way of the Sword. Also wields an Oni Gauntlet, marking him as something more than a common Genma.

The real history behind them

Capcom builds the Genma story on real Japanese history. Nobunaga Oda was assassinated at Honnō-ji in 1582 by Akechi Mitsuhide. Samanosuke Akechi, the protagonist of Warlords and Demon Siege, is based on Akechi Hidemitsu, Mitsuhide’s vanguard commander who led the actual attack. Hideyoshi Toyotomi was Nobunaga’s successor and the second of Japan’s three great unifiers. Every major Genma event in the series is anchored to a real historical moment, with the supernatural elements layered on top.
