The Oni Gauntlet — Series-Central Artifact Explained
The Oni Gauntlet is Onimusha's signature bracer, worn by every protagonist. It absorbs demon souls, powers weapons, drives healing, unlocks transformations.
FAQ
What is the Oni Gauntlet?
Who wears the Oni Gauntlet?
What do the soul colors mean?
The Oni Gauntlet is the signature artifact of the entire Onimusha franchise — a supernatural bracer worn on the protagonist’s left arm that absorbs demon souls from defeated enemies and converts them into the resources you need to fight back. Every mainline protagonist wears one: Samanosuke, Jubei, Jacques Blanc, Soki, Miyamoto Musashi, and the rest. In Way of the Sword (2026), the antagonist Sasaki Kojiro also wields one, marking him as something more than a common Genma.
What the gauntlet does
The Oni Gauntlet’s core loop drives every Onimusha game: kill demons, absorb souls, spend souls. The soul type determines what you get.
| Soul color | Function |
|---|---|
| Red | Currency. Used to upgrade weapons at save points and to buy items from NPCs. The series’ primary economic resource. |
| Yellow | Restores health. Common drop from most enemies. |
| Blue | Restores magic / fuels Oni Armaments (the heavy-damage consumable weapons in Way of the Sword and Demon Siege). |
| Purple | Onimusha 2 only. Charges the temporary Onimusha transformation meter — when full, Jubei transforms into an Oni demon for a limited time. Requires 5 Oni Orbs to unlock. |
| Green | Warlords 2019 remaster only. Five collected grant temporary invincibility. |
Game-by-game notes
- Warlords (2001): The gauntlet is a passive item. You don’t manage it directly — red souls are auto-spent at save points when you upgrade. Yellow and blue are auto-consumed for healing and magic.
- Onimusha 2 (2002): The gauntlet is the gateway to the Onimusha transformation. Collect five Oni Orbs scattered through the game to unlock purple-soul consumption and the temporary demon form.
- Demon Siege (2004): Adds temporary Onimusha mode as a parry / kill reward — defeating enemies while in Onimusha mode extends the timer.
- Dawn of Dreams (2006): Each of the five playable characters has their own variant of the gauntlet, with subtly different soul economy rules.
- Way of the Sword (2026): The new Oni Armaments system — heavy-damage weapons fueled by blue souls — is the headline addition. The gauntlet also powers the new Oni Vision, a utility ability that highlights all demons in the area.
Lore significance
The Oni Gauntlet exists because humans need a way to fight Genma on equal footing. In-universe, the gauntlets were forged by the Oni clan — a race of half-demon warriors who sided with humanity during earlier Genma incursions and whose bloodline continues through the protagonists. Every main character is either an Oni by blood or has been given a gauntlet by an Oni elder.
