The mysterious figure who granted Oni Gauntlets to both Musashi and Ganryu. After doing so he continues to make unexpected appearances, but his goals, and whether he is to be trusted or not remain completely unknown.

Two structural facts land with that sentence: the game’s two Oni Gauntlet wielders — Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Ganryu — received their Gauntlets from the same source, and Capcom is deliberately withholding that source’s agenda.

Why the granting matters

The Oni Gauntlet is the series-defining artifact — forged in the older games to channel Genma soul energy against the Genma themselves. Way of the Sword re-centers the question of provenance: if both the protagonist and his rival wear Gauntlets handed out by one unnamed figure, then the Man in White sits upstream of the entire conflict. His episode is also where Capcom revealed Ganryu’s post-duel return, transformed by forbidden Gauntlet practices — the Man in White’s gift, gone wrong.
