FAQ
Who is Samanosuke Akechi?
Is Samanosuke based on a real person?
Why does Samanosuke appear as an old monk in Dawn of Dreams?
Samanosuke Akechi (明智左馬介) is the original Onimusha protagonist and the face of the franchise’s first three games. He is a Sengoku-era Oni warrior who fights the Genma demon invasion with a katana and the supernatural Oni Gauntlet. He stars in Warlords (2001) and Demon Siege (2004), and reappears as the elderly monk Tenkai Nankōbō in Dawn of Dreams (2006).
Real historical basis
Samanosuke is loosely based on Akechi Hidemitsu (明智秀満, c. 1536 – July 4, 1582), a real-life samurai who served Akechi Mitsuhide and led the vanguard at the Honnō-ji Incident that killed Oda Nobunaga. After Mitsuhide’s defeat at Yamazaki, Hidemitsu fled to Sakamoto Castle on the shores of Lake Biwa and committed seppuku, writing a death poem in his own blood.
“Sama-no-suke” was Hidemitsu’s actual Imperial Court courtesy title — Capcom preserved it in the character name. The game’s adaptation: in 1582, Samanosuke is on a personal mission to rescue his cousin Princess Yuki from Fortinbras and the Genma, and ends up defending Gifu Castle.
Onimusha: Warlords (2001)
Samanosuke’s debut. Tank-style D-pad controls, fixed camera angles, three elemental katanas (Raizan, Enryuu, Shippuu) plus limited long-range weapons. His signature Issen parry lets him instantly kill most common enemies with precise timing.
The 2019 remaster for Switch / PS4 / Xbox One / PC adds optional modern analog stick movement, widescreen support, and quick weapon switching — the recommended way to play this game today.
Onimusha 3: Demon Siege (2004)
The over-the-shoulder camera debut for the series, contemporaneous with and visually inspired by the original Resident Evil 4 development. Samanosuke’s moveset is expanded with close-range combos and a bow. The game alternates between him in 1582 Japan and the French captain Jacques Blanc in 2004 Paris.
Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams (2006)
Samanosuke does not star — instead, he appears as the elderly monk Tenkai Nankōbō, training five new Oni warriors against the next Genma incursion. He has no playable sections; his presence is a narrative throughline connecting the original trilogy to the new cast.
