What do rescuing Lion Dogs unlock?
When do Lion Dogs start appearing?
Do Lion Dogs carry into New Game+?
This page lists all 36 Lion Dog locations in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, map by map, in the same order the in-game Curious Cases tab counts them. Rescuing every one earns the For the Love of Dog trophy and the last of six sword skins, tracked alongside the other collectible sets in the Platinum roadmap.
How do Lion Dog rescues work?
A Lion Dog is a dog wrapped in purple Genma fog. Per IGN’s walkthrough pages, you approach and interact to clear the fog — that is the whole rescue. They start appearing after you complete What Lurks in the Shadows and meet Lady Murasaki, and from then on each one is marked on the map with a pawprint icon, so this is the friendliest collectible set to sweep.
One gating rule from PowerPyx: on maps beyond Eastern Kyoto, Lion Dogs do not spawn until that entire map has been liberated and its map-final boss defeated. If pawprints are missing from Mount Oe or Arashiyama, that is why — not a bug.
What do the sword skins unlock and when?
Rescues pay out on a fixed ladder — a new sword skin every six dogs, per IGN:
| Rescues | Sword skin |
|---|---|
| 6 | Sakurahime |
| 12 | Shishioh |
| 18 | Myogo |
| 24 | Ura-giri |
| 30 | Mooncrossed |
| 36 | Kikoku + For the Love of Dog trophy |
The final skin, Kikoku, arrives together with the trophy at the full 36.

Numbers follow PowerPyx’s guide, grouped by its map headers. Eastern Kyoto holds 21 of the 36 — it is the densest map by far.

Missability and New Game+
The standard rule applies: free roam holds until the point of no return before The Clash at Rendaino, so keep a manual save there and sweep the pawprints at leisure. Lion Dogs also carry over into New Game+ (as do Genma Notes), so a trophy run that starts a Carnage playthrough keeps its rescue count.
While clearing Eastern Kyoto’s 21, the 109 Power and Oni Stones run through the same streets — the two sweeps pair naturally. For everything else the game tracks, the trophy guide keeps the full table, and the walkthrough hub maps which story phase unlocks which district.
