The PS5 version has the largest critic pool (91 reviews); the Switch 2 version holds the highest platform score (89). On Steam, players rate the game Very Positive — 91.0% positive across 29,448 user reviews as of October 16, 2026, per Steam’s own review API. Launch sales

Capcom’s IR announcement of September 7, 2026 reports worldwide sales surpassing 1 million units on the September 4 launch day, and the launch pushed the Onimusha series past 10 million lifetime units — the series’ first new entry in over twenty years crossing that milestone on the back of a single day-one performance. The release says worldwide sales without distinguishing sell-through from shipments.

What is Way of the Sword about?

Way of the Sword is a standalone narrative set in Edo-period Kyoto, roughly 60 years after the events of Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. Capcom has confirmed it is separate from the Samanosuke / Jubei / Soki saga — new players can start here without spoilers. The protagonist is an Oni warrior wielding a katana and the new Break Issen parry system.

The setting borrows from real history: Edo-period Kyoto, 1603 onward. The antagonist is Sasaki Ganryu (also known as Sasaki Kojiro), the historical rival of Miyamoto Musashi, reimagined here as an Oni Gauntlet wielder. A recurring NPC, Lady Murasaki, gives the player side missions across the campaign.

Editions

The standard edition is $69.99 USD. Steam also lists a $79.99 Deluxe Edition and an $89.99 Premium Deluxe Edition (verified September 17, 2026, via Steam package data tracked by SteamDB); their kits are itemized on the editions page, and no physical collector’s edition has been announced. The digital pre-order bonus became an Early Adopter Bonus that ended September 25, 2026, per Capcom’s July 2 announcement.
