FAQ

What do Genma Notes actually do?
They are bestiary files: each note documents one named Genma and its background, and entries keep updating with new variants as you defeat them. Collecting all 23 unlocks the Genma-ologist trophy.
Can I miss any Genma Notes?
All 22 early notes stay reachable until the point of no return before the final mission. Note 23 (Yoshitsune) only appears after beating the game — reload your cleared save, and you drop back before the final mission with the well behind Rokudo-chinnoji Temple now openable.
Do Genma Notes carry into New Game+?
Yes — Genma Notes and Lion Dogs both carry over, per PowerPyx's roadmap. Mysteries of Kyoto, Chance Encounters, clothing and sword/gauntlet enhancements do not.

This page lists all 23 Genma Note locations in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, in story order, with the Genma each note documents. Collecting the full set earns the Genma-ologist trophy — the collectible category tracked in the Platinum roadmap.

How do Genma Notes work?

Genma Notes are this game’s bestiary: each one documents a named Genma, and per Vandal the entries keep filling in with new variants as you defeat them — they are lore files, not equipment. Finding all 23 earns the Genma-ologist trophy, a Bronze.

They are also the only collectible set that is never marked on the map. Every note sits in a hidden treasure chest: IGN notes you need Oni Vision active to spot anything at the location, and the chest itself is revealed by Oni Power — walk to the spot, see nothing, raise Oni Vision, then let the gauntlet’s Oni Power uncover the chest. The two sources describe the two halves of the same interaction.

Spoiler note, in Vandal’s spirit: the list below unavoidably names enemies and bosses you meet late in the story.

Thirteen of the 23 are boss dossiers, covered by the eleven strategy pages on this wiki: Byakue, Dohatsu-ten, Nue (the guide also covers the Greater Nue rematch), Daidara, Rasho Gan, Sasaki Ganryu, Benkei, Shuten Doji, Dokyo, Ifuu and Burai, and Minamoto no Yoshitsune. For who the Genma are, the Genma faction page has the lore.

How do you get Genma Note 23?

Yoshitsune’s note is the odd one out: it exists only after the credits. PowerPyx’s instructions, confirmed in the guide’s comments by its author: defeat Minamoto no Yoshitsune, then reload your save — the reload drops you back before the final mission, and the well behind Rokudo-chinnoji Temple now responds to Oni Vision and Oni Power, revealing the final chest.

Missability and New Game+

Everything except note 23 stays collectible until the point of no return before The Clash at Rendaino — keep a manual save at the prompt for cleanup, the same rule as the 109 Power and Oni Stones. One reported lockout: note 20 (Dokyo) sits past the Hozukyo Gorge, and players who progressed past the gorge found they could no longer fast-travel back — the fix, per PowerPyx’s comment thread, is scrolling the map fully down; the region stays teleportable from there.

Genma Notes carry over into New Game+, so a trophy run never re-hunts them. The other carry-over collectible is the Lion Dog set; most other categories — Mysteries of Kyoto, Chance Encounters, clothing — do not carry.
