FAQ

What is Issen?
Issen (一閃, "one flash") is the Onimusha series' signature parry. Tap Attack at the last instant before an enemy strike lands to instantly kill the enemy or land a massive counterattack. Available in every mainline Onimusha game.
What is Break Issen?
Break Issen is the reworked Issen in Way of the Sword (2026). Instead of an instant kill, parrying drains the enemy's stamina gauge. Once the gauge empties, you can execute the demon by dismemberment. On bosses, the execution gives you a choice between heavy damage or more souls.
Does Issen work on bosses?
In the original games (2001–2006), Issen works on most common enemies but only rarely on bosses. In Way of the Sword, Break Issen is the main way to deal with boss damage windows.

Issen (一閃, “one flash”) is the Onimusha series’ signature parry mechanic, present in every mainline game from Warlords (2001) through Dawn of Dreams (2006). Break Issen is its reworked version in Way of the Sword (2026). Mastering the parry is the single biggest skill gap between new and experienced players — and in Way of the Sword, it’s the central combat loop, not a niche trick.

The original Issen (2001–2006)

In the four classic Onimusha games, Issen worked like this: tap Attack at the very last instant before an enemy strike lands. The window is roughly 6 to 10 frames depending on the game. Hit it cleanly and you land an instant kill on common enemies, or a massive damage counter on tougher ones. Miss the window and you take the hit normally.

The timing is harder than it sounds. The window is small, the visual cue is the enemy’s weapon beginning its swing toward you, and the audio cue is a faint sword-slash sound effect that you only hear with practice. Most beginners try to parry too early — the game punishes that by letting the enemy’s weapon connect before you’ve tapped Attack.

Break Issen in Way of the Sword (2026)

Way of the Sword replaces instant-kill Issen with a stamina-based system. Every enemy has a stamina gauge. Successfully parrying drains it. Once the gauge empties, you can press the heavy-attack button to execute the demon by dismemberment.

On regular enemies: execute to clear them quickly. You’ll often get a few extra souls as a reward for a clean execution chain.

On bosses: the execution becomes a strategic choice. The game pauses briefly and gives you two options:

  • Heavy damage — finish the execution for maximum HP damage. Use this when the boss is close to death and you want to push the kill.
  • More souls — back off, preserve the execution for later, and let the boss’s stamina refill naturally. Use this when you need red souls for upgrades or blue souls for Oni Armaments.

How to actually time the parry

Three concrete rules of thumb, verified by Capcom pre-release coverage and demo gameplay:

  1. Watch the enemy’s weapon, not the enemy’s body. The wind-up animation starts on the body; the strike begins when the weapon starts moving. Parry on the weapon, not on the body.
  2. Hold block until you see the strike, then tap Attack. Holding block reduces chip damage if you mistime. Tapping Attack on the parry frame triggers Break Issen. Many beginners instinctively mash Attack — don’t.
  3. Consecutive parries stack combat buffs. Way of the Sword rewards aggressive parrying with stacking damage bonuses. The first parry is the hardest; the second, third, and fourth come easier as your muscle memory locks in.

Stamina and soul economy

Each Break Issen costs you nothing but timing. What it gives you depends on the enemy:

  • Regular Genma: clear the fight, get the souls.
  • Heavy Genma: stagger and execute, get more souls.
  • Miniboss-tier enemies: stamina gauge takes 4–6 parries to empty; execution gives a meaningful soul payout.
  • Bosses: parry is the only way to access the execution window; missing the window still drains some stamina but the boss retaliates hard.
